The History of Mackinac Birkenstock

For centuries, visitors have found Mackinac Island, a State Park and national landmark, to be the ideal vacation spot. No cars. No chain hotels.

Just old world charm, world-famous Mackinac Island fudge, historic Fort Mackinac, unique shopping and diverse dining. Mackinac Birkenstock began its life on Mackinac Island in 1999 when Frances Barger and Peter Marabell began selling Birkenstock footwear and Chaco outdoor sandals. For the next 16 years, Mackinac Birkenstock welcomed clients to its charming, but small space on Astor Street. It was here that the philosophy of “service first” was developed and refined. With a focus on staff training and experience in the subtle art of fitting footwear they built Mackinac Birkenstock’s reputation for making clients more comfortable on their feet at work and at play.

In 2015, Mackinac Birkenstock moved to its current location in the courtyard of the Lilac Tree Hotel on Main Street. With more space, the selection of Birkenstock footwear and Chaco sandals grew to be one of the finest in the state.

Over the years, Mackinac Birkenstock and its staff have become active members of the community participating in the island’s charitable, civic and social life. Each year, Mackinac Birkenstocks supports the Medical Center benefit, the Christmas Bazaar, the flower basket fund and an array of other civic ventures including the Arts Council, the Public School, and the library.

Laura and Jeff Cline took over the business in 2021 with plans to continue the focus on customer service and growing the business to share the joys of footwear fashion and comfort.
